I’ve never been able to take the people who act like Lady Gaga is some kind of visionary genius seriously, but I’ve never quite bought in to the people who excoriate her as if she were one of worst pop acts in existence either. She’s a mid-range, modestly talented pop star, and there are actually a few of her songs I will admit to liking, but her over-the-top image merely distracts from the fact that her music is pretty conventional, standard pop fare. That said, this is probably her best single to date, for the simple reason that it actually exhibits the quirkiness she’s supposedly known for but rarely exhibits in her actual music. With its insanely catchy nonsense-word chorus, its random, for-the-hell-of-it Hitchcock references, and its overall feel of creepy obsession, this is practically the only time Lady Gaga puts her money where her mouth is and follows through on her promise, and in any case it’s just a damn good song. If everything she released was like this, I’d be a hardcore fan.
