The Indie Rock crossover trend really does seem to be devolving into nothing but big, four-chord pop anthems, but as songs like that go, this is a particularly excellent one. For those who assumed this title was merely an overwrought metaphor, no, this song is quite literally about the fall of the Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash in antiquity. The upbeat, even carefree tune contrasts sharply with the subject matter, and its distinctive background chanting and extreme case of lyrical dissonance give it a genuinely distinctive savor when compared to the other pop-rock anthems on the charts right now.
