ELO were basically to Prog-Rock what Duran Duran were to New-Wave Synthpop…the watered-down commercial version of a difficult genre…but frankly, they made better music than most “real” Prog acts. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest arrangers and producers in the history of Rock, and while he leaves something to be desired as a lyricist, he certainly knows how to write a catchy tune. This song has more impact heard in the context of the original album (it was the climax of an extended suite of songs called “Concerto For a Rainy Day”), but in any case, it is still one of ELO’S greatest achievements, and one of the most joyous and delightful tracks in all off Classic Rock.
