This may be the most unique film I’ve covered yet. No dialogue, no lyrics, just forty minutes of percussive World Music. It was made under the banner of the Physical Theater percussive dance troop Stomp, but while it does feature the group, it focuses more on their influences, shown in authentic settings throughout the world. If they had tried to draw the piece out longer, the result might have gotten a bit tedious, but as it is, it’s an oddly absorbing, even hypnotic filmgoing experience. This piece has become a popular education tool on the subject of World Music, and if you have the patience to enjoy something not based on traditional values of story and dialogue, I highly recommend it as a fascinating and eye-opening cinematic curiosity.
